Facebook group develops into nonprofit helping thousands of people in Cobb County

Written By: Team CMC

From humble beginnings as "just" a Facebook group, Cobb Moms Helping Cobb (CMHC) has grown into a nonprofit organization with 5,000 members that raised more than $74,000 and assisted 700 people in 2023 alone. The nonprofit helps Cobb residents eliminate short-term obstacles in the way of being self-sufficient.

"Many people in our community are on the edge between being self-sufficient and facing catastrophe from one flat tire or illness, and sometimes they just need a little boost," says Jody Vane, President of Cobb Moms Helping Cobb. "CMHC is a network of women and men who want to be that helping hand for our neighbors when they need it most."

In a world where social media has often turned toxic, CMHC's online forum focuses on positivity and uplifting the community. Created in 2014, the Facebook group helps families with children in their care from birth to age 18 who live in Cobb County. The group will post a need for a family not met by existing social programs. Members donate money, items or services to meet the need.

CMHC helps with rental assistance, hotel assistance, utilities, daycare costs, groceries, cleaning items, school supplies, and other necessities for Cobb County residents. The organization receives referrals from school social workers, local and state agencies, and direct requests. Each request is vetted by CMHC or by the referring agency. Depending on the circumstance, the organization provides $750 or less per family.

Recently the group helped a mom with two kids who is a full time nurse. She was struggling with medical problems and an expensive surgery that would take her out of the workforce for a few months, making it difficult to pay her rent and other bills. CMHC stepped in to help cover her rent and connect her to other agencies that could contribute. Without CMHC's help, she could have faced eviction. Now she can focus on healing from her surgery, return to work and eventually pay her own way.

"People need just a little bit of help sometimes. We've purchased non-slip shoes for someone to work in a restaurant," says Jody. "They've never come back asking for more, they really just needed a pair of shoes that allows them to work."
